Renaming the Microsoft Office Assistant Folder
Last Modified: April 14, 1999

Description
The paper clip is the animated figure which indicates that the Microsoft Office Assistant is running. The office Assistant can prevent JAWS from functioning properly in all Microsoft applications.

Solution
Our recommended solution is to rename the Office Assistant folder, which is called "actors", to something like "actors.old".
Step-by-step instructions for accomplishing this follow:
1. Close all running Microsoft applications.
2. Press control-escape to go to the Start Menu.
3. Press the letter "F" to open the Find dialog.
4. Press enter on Files or Folders.
5. Type the word, "actors" in the "Named" field.
6. Tab to "Look In" and make sure your hard drive (usually (c:) is selected.
7. Tab to "Include Subfolders" and press the spacebar to check it if it is unchecked.
8. Press Enter.
9. If it says "File not Found", either the name was mistyped or the folder has already been renamed.
10. When it says "1 files found", the file should already be selected. Press F2 to rename the folder.
11. Press the End key to go to the end of the name without erasing it.
12. Type ".old", so that the name now reads "actors.old" and press Enter.
13. Press Alt-F4 to close the Find Dialog.
14. Reopen your Microsoft application.
